ARCHITECTURAL STATE AWARD 2007 CATEGORY C | CONTEMPORARY INTERVENTIONS IN TRADITIONAL, HISTORICAL BUILDINGS.
Trapezaris Construction were awarded by the former President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. Tassos Papadopoulos the architectural state aware 2007 for this historical listed building redevelopment located in Vavla villa. The traditional stone-built building in Vavla was purchased to become the permanent home of the owner. The building was a microcosm of local rural architectural tradition. The ground floor served mainly as a craft space, while the habitable areas were limited to the much lower level. The main trunk of the traditional building was renovated with great care and adherence to the appropriate methods: where it was necessary to rebuild the local stone, re-use the original plaster, plaster and gypsum concrete on the floors (above the underfloor heating), casting without drivers, hydrophilic limestones and roofs of reeds and scaffolds to retained them just as they were. Contemporary interventions, were made with concrete, steel and glass, so that the contrast between the two sides highlights the historical depth of the building, reinforces the identity of each party and allows for a correct reading of the development of the building over time.
